  1. The biggest problem most lawyers get into with clients comes from not communicating with them.  People go to lawyers with problems they don't generally understand, they need to be reassured, and that takes attention.

Based on that, I think the commercials that basically have the one message "I will fight for you" don't work.  Clients don't merely want a lawyer to fight for them, they want to understand what's actually happening.

I'd suggest you focus on things like "approachability" and "speaking plain language" and "keeping the client informed".  Most lawyers suck at those, and prospective clients WILL respond.  Just to make a point, I recently "represented" a client in a matter outside my field.  My SOLE function was to explain to them what the attorney actually doing the work was doing, what it all meant.  It has value to people, and no matter how good the actual service is, it has NO perceived value if the client doesn't understand it.

Look, if all the lawyer does is say "Don't worry about it" and "Sign this", most people are going to think "Sheesh, I don't need you for that, I can sign things I don't understand without YOU."

They want someone that will make it make sense to them, for better or for worse.

  2. Use the image of a spike-collared bulldog in the advertising. When people hire a lawyer they don't want a pansy, they want a bulldog!

  3. paint a plus mark on the side of the building. I've always associated the "+"  symbol with "positive"
