  1. The Plaza's in Latin America are like the old town squares in North America.  There are not many of these old town squares surviving in North America though.  There will be some of the government offices, food, park, perhaps a local policia post and some general trading of local produce and wares.  Always a "park" like setting with places to sit.......and yes, the Church.  Usually Catholic.  Locals -live- in the Church.  It is where people meet, go to get out of the sun/heat or rain.  The Church is a part of their lives, not just for Sunday service.  They will chat, sleep, rest, put on make-up (I've seen it) enjoy their lunch or a snack.  It's a second home!

The Plaza is also frequently the center of the weekly market day.  On Holidays, the Plaza will be full of people and sellers (booths) of every kind.  Music, dancing, children running everywhere.

  2. One would find anything, really. A church, government buildings, coffee shops, etc.

Churches are VERY popular, though (so are governmental buildings)
