I went to dinner the other night with a guy I am dating, the service was great and the food was good. The place was a steakhouse. Our bill came to 63.00 and he left 6.00. I was very upset about this and ended up adding 3 extra dollars to make up for it. Was his tip appropriate? I used to be a waitress so I over tip alot.

  1. I would have tipped $12-15 (I'm an ex waitress too).  For those who say plumbers, carpenters, etc don't get tipped so why should waiters? -- Plumbers, carpenters, etc don't get paid $2/hour.  No, tipping isn't mandatory, and I don't think a waiter who gives poor or mediocre service should be tipped well, but a good server who knows his stuff should be tipped accordingly.  We want to keep them working there!

  2. If the service was good,my glass never got empty, and the food was hot and to order.....I would have tipped $10.

I used to work in the service industry and I understand how hard it is to work in that line, that is ususally your only source of income and I appreciate the ones that work hard.

  3. I think you were right. $6 is just below 10% and while that might have been ok you said the service and the food was good. your adding the $3 made the tip about 15%. so I agree that was better for the service. then again I tend to overtip too but i do believe you were correct.

  4. in this case i would have tipped 15% that is cheaper than cooking at home and you dont even have to clean up afterwards

  5. Tipping should NOT be required.  A tip is to give a small bonus to the wait staff for good service.  Tips should NOT be calculated as part of the wage, at least by the employer.

  6. If you were happy with the service and food then I would leave a generous tip! I usually leave about 15% to 20% of the total bill. These people work hard and put up with alot from customers.

these people work hard for their money. Normally I leave about 15% to 20% of the total bill.

  7. Your tip of Approx. 15% was appropriate. However, if the service was really good, 20% would have been better. And never punish the waiter/waitress for bad food--only bad service.

  8. That's a really low tip, not even 10%.  Usually when I'm with my friends we double the tax and round up (around 16.5-17%), unless it's already specified on the bill.

  9. I ALWAYS (if paying by credit or debit:) AND WRITE IN THE TIP SEC. I WRITE     -----NO  TIP----   THEN TIP IN CASH AND MY FOOD,WAITER-ESS ,ALL AROUND SERVICE /DRINKS STRONG/WEAK/FOOD HOT AND IN REASONABLE TIME  DID THE SERVER BUG YA OR GIVE YA TIME TO EAT INSTEAD OF ASKING   ?   W/YOUR MOUTH FULL     (i hate it when a server ask if the food is good   b 4 you have even taken a bite   --like don't know b---   atch  haven't tasted it yet!!!!!!!!!!!!)  get the h**l away from me and let the tip do the talking    stop at the table now and then but leave me alone so i can EAT!!!!     ya bug me tip goes down you ignore me tip goes down    ---i have had $30 meals and left   3  pennies   and had $59 meals & left a $100 tip  so it is all how ya get along   just don't bug me  nor ignore me!!!!   hard to get it JUST RIGHT !!!but something close and the tip will reflect how your doin and adjust and tips will grow w/your abillity to read people and if they want hand and foot service or stay away til i ask!!!!!!! there is reason good servers make good$$$$ and others are driving a 20 year old car w/one wiper working!!!!!!!!!just take  u r time & never ask a    ?  when someone has their mouth full of FOOD!!!!!!!!!

  10. If it were me, the server would have gotten the proper 20% that he/she earned.

If people don't want to tip properly they should stay home and cook.

    You did the right thing.

  11. i would have tiped 15

  12. I would have tipped 20% is everything was great. Yes, tipping is not mandatory, but it is an understood part of eating out in our society. Everyone knows that a waiter or waitress is not paid at least minimum wage and their pay is almost soley reliant upon their tips.

The irony is that the worst tippers are usually the one's who are calling the waiter or waitress over to their table non-stop for every little thing! If you don't want to tip, then there should be a rule against being a pain in the a**.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if this is a restaurant that you like and would want to frequent in the future, it's good to build a good relationship with the people who work there. Tipping is on top of that list!

  13. I would have tipped 10 dollars

  14. I personally would have tipped more like $12, but I always feel like I over tip.  A lot of people honestly don't know how to tip . . . it might not necessarily be because he's cheap.

  15. I like to tip 20 % if everything goes well - sometimes more if the service is impeccable. I would have left at least $12.60

  16. I AM SERVER AND FOR GOOD SERVIVE I TIP 20%  BUT NO LESS THEN 10% .... WHERE I WORKIT IS 2.33 AN HOUR PLUS TIPS.. AND 3% OF SALES GO TO TIP SHARE.. I AGREE POOR SERVCE DOENST DESERVE A GOOD TIP

  17. Your boyfriend is lame. Servers usually only get half min wage or less. They depend on tips to get by. Like it or not you insulted this guy. Just make sure you don't go back. If it is a place you go often don't let this guy low ball the tip. If I have no complaints and am happy I count the tens and multiply by two rounding to the neares tent. In this case $12. In the past I have had excellent food but terrible service. In which case I tipped the cook just to make a point

  18. His tip was OK 10%

  19. I feel it was 4 dollars to much, why do you feel the need to tip for a service they are being paid to provide the customer..

do you tip a check out clerk, sales clerk or the cashier at you bank for serving you..

  20. A tip is not a mandatory thing.  It is not written in stone.   I too work in the service industry.  I receive no tip.   A carpenter, plumber, painter, just don't get these things.    We get an hourly wage.    If the waitress can't live on the hourly wage she receives.....the tip is: find a better paying job.

    Sorry, have no pity.

  21. i think this also has to do with the region you are in - which explains the varied answers.

if the service was good and i was happy with my food the waiterwould have gotten 18-20% - mind you this is NY metro area. i know ALOT of places in the country 15% is considered a "good" tip.

the waiter in this case would have gotten 74$ total or so

  22. Maybe that's all he could afford to tip after buying you dinner.  At least he gave a tip some people don't leave anything.  Now if he's making the big money,  then maybe he's just cheap  for leaving $6.00.
