i'm thinking yet again of a list of things i need/want to buy before i buy a horse. i have a good part of it already(considering how many years i've been riding) but i want to make sure i can plan to buy everything i need before i get the horse.

i have:

2 saddles (western/english)

3 girths (2english (1 pony/1 horse) and western)

lost count of how many saddle pads i collected.

horse soap/saddle soap/sponges/clothes.

full set of leg wraps

2 turn out blankets (1 pony/1horse)

3-4 bridles of all diff sizes.

2 bits (western style (idk exact name of it) and snaffle. there is a tomthumb somewhere)

vet wrap

shipping boots

saddle racks, bridle racks, buckets, shovels, broom, feed bin, lung whip, lung line, hoof pick.

those are most the stuff i have already, what else do i need to get/save for along the lines of equipment?

my guess:

new blanket to fit a new horse

set of brushes (since mine are scattered all over the place and i have yet to find a complete set)

what else?

  1. You have a lot of it covered.

    Halter

    Leads (at least 2)

    Fly Mask/Whisk

You will think of other things, guaranteed, after you get your horse. But you will be able to pick those up any time. You have the basics, and then some listed.

Edit - Wow! You are definately set. That med kit that yellowsmileyfaces said about would be a great med kit. You definately will need that stuff.

  2. I have owned or ridden horses for the past 18 years besides a corral, a feed bin and some way to get fresh water to the horse and basic grooming supplies  you can never be prepared for the new horse that you may get. It doesn't matter how many blankets, boots, bridles or saddles you may have. The fact of the matter is every horse is different, has different needs and requirements. One blanket might be shorter than another, one saddle may or may not fit, the bits you have may be for a soft mouth or may not. You should buy the horse first and then buy all the amenities toys and tack that best and properly fit that horse.

  3. Buckets, cross ties, lead ropes, shampoo, bridle...

  4. You have good basics.

I would wait until you got the horse, so you can get things that fit it.

  5. A really good first aid/medicine box - a few things I'd want to have at all times -

    triple antibiotic

    nolvasan

    dmso

    bute

    banamine

    ace

    ranitidine

    betadine

    furazone

    smz's

    aluminum spray bandage

    liniment poultice

    hoof packing

    epsom salts

    rubbing alcohol

    gauze (squares & rolled)

    elastoplast bandage

    duct tape

    diapers

    scissors

    bit tape

    standing wraps

    plastic wrap

I'm sure I'll think of more later!

  6. bute, flyspray and penicillin for sure, oh and some spray on wound protectant. Its better to have it, then dont have it right? :-P

  7. Girl I'm a shopper and i have so much stuff i dont think i need, well maybe one day i will need...I figure you cant have enough and its my money I'm going to spend it.  I dont blanket my horses, but they have a nice cozy warm place to go in the winter, plus I'm in California.  What i do is go on line to stateline, country supply, jeffers and several others and look and see what else i want, didn't say i needed it LOL.  You can get catalogs, they can be your wish books :)   Plus you get to see all the new stuff out.  I wouldn't buy the halters, bits and girths till you had the horse, everyone is different.  Get the catalogs, believe me you'll be glued and have little i want tags all over them.  The places i listed above i have purchased from on line and they all are good...In fact i ordered clippers from Jeffersequnie and there was a broken tab thingy, so i contacted them and without me sending broken pair back they shipped me out new clippers.

  8. Some other things to consider are Halters, I use rope halters,

Lead ropes with good ends on them that don't easily break, two at all times unless you loose one, also, fly masks especially in this hot season, also Fly Spray and Medical Supplies. Some other things that you could include are hay nets and salt blocks. Also, maybe invest in a manure spreader!

  9. Honest to God that's more stuff than I have with 6 horses I own.. LOL

Now save your money for the feed bill, mine is going up every day.

  10. Include a timer and stethoscope in your first aid kit. :)

I've had to count my horse's pulse for a minute, with no watch/clock available while I was alone at the barn.

Not easy. :) Ended up using the stopwatch on my iPod, lol.

I also dug around for 20 minutes (while on the phone with the vet, lol) looking for a stethoscope. Luckily a fellow boarder had one and didn't mind one bit that I messed up her 'bin' looking for it. :)

  11. A wheelbarrow is invaluable!  Don't forget it!!

And I like the convenience of a water trough over filling a smaller bucket.  When I had an automatic waterer...that was nice too.  Until one of my horses decided it was a toy and broke it!
