I am putting an adittion on my upstairs (14'x24'). I am going to have vaulted ceilings because otherwise the ceiling would be only 7 1/2' high. It is going to be the master bedroom and I am not sure if I want the whole space to be the bedroom. Would you rather have a large bedroom with a regular closet, a bedroom with a bathroom and small closet, or a bedroom with a walk in closet? Our upstairs doesn't currently have a bathroom. Any suggestions is appreciated.

  1. Definately go with the master bedroom/master bathroom combo, it will add greater value to your home.

  2. I would rather have a bedroom with a bathroom and small closet :)

  3. Personally I would prefer a small bathroom (eg WC & walk-in shower with possibly a small sink across the corner) and  a smaller wardrobe.

Going downstairs during the night for the toilet would not be my idea of heaven I'm afraid!

  4. You should definitely add the bathroom, not only will you have the convenience of a bathroom on the second story, you can call it a master suite which will appeal to buyers. I think most house buyers expect a master bedroom to have an attached bathroom as well as a large closet. Are you designing the space yourself, or do you have an architect designer doing it for you? Perhaps they can find a way to incorporate  the walk in closet as well as a bathroom in your new space.

  5. I think the bathroom is the first priority.  The ability to call it a "Master Suite" is huge for resale value.  Also, you can always store more things elsewhere in the house, but there's nothing like the convenience of an en suite bathroom.
