My 13 year old cat has always been fat but now he is only fat in the belly I can feel his back bone, ribs and hip bones..he still eats and drinks not as much as usual but it is like he isn't getting the nutrition..is it b/c he is old or does he have something else going on?

  1. This may be due to age. Eventually gravity is bound to do this sort of thing to everyone. However, if he acts strange or seems to be in pain, a vet trip would do him well. A friend of mine had a cat with a similar problem and it turned out he had diabetes, which is fairly common in overweight cats and can be lethal without treatment.

  2. One of my cats a long time ago lost a lot of weight REALLY fast and it was because of renal failure.  One of the cats that I have now is a little older and has gone from fat to skinny back to fat without being sick.  That doesn't mean that all cats are like that.  If your cat is losing a lot of weight and you can feel its bones I would probably take him.  A check up wouldn't hurt anything.
