  1. Mossberg 505 YOUTH™ 20ga Wood Blue 20" Accu-Choke

  2. Remington 870 LW20-

    20 ga

    19" barrel with vent rib

    Improved fixed choke

    3" chamber.

    5.25 pounds empty

The new models are powder coated(2000-present), the older models are blued and feel tighter.

I loved mine but dad felt the need to trade up to a 12ga 870 wingmaster

28" when I was 14.  I regret his actions everyday, as I simply cannot seem to locate an old model.  That gun was great for rabbits, birds, and clay.  And at 5.25 pounds, it is an easy carry for an all day hunting trip.

  3. A 20 gauge, or 12 gauge if you can handle the recoil. Don't get a .410, you won't be able to hit anything with the small amount of shot.

  4. A 20 gauge would be good for beginners.

  5. Remington 870 Express in 20 gauge is a nice shotgun that you can also grow into. You can take deer to geese with a 20.

  6. Your best choice for a starter youth shotgun is the Mossberg pump action Model with the ventilated rib barrel.* Great shotgun, reasonably priced, very smooth action, low recoil or kick, light weight, quality built, rugged, dependable, durable, pleasant to shoot, easy to carry, it will last beyond your lifetime.*** I am talking about the 20 gauge. That is the best gauge for you.*

  7. My first hunting shotgun was a .410.

  8. There are alot of good youth guns out there. What really is the most important thing with a youth shotgun is it wieghted for a kid. If the gun company didn't do much work and the gun is really heavy, the kid wont be able to swing it.

As for companies, Remington's 870 is one of the best shotgun ever made. But winchester and mossberg also make similar guns. If you want to step the gun up some the Beneli pump is amazing. I was going to get one of these( im 15 but i was gunna get it at 13. but i got an O/U).

As far as gauge, it depends on the kid. If it is a younger kid then they might need a .410 or a 28ga. But the problem with that is that ammo cost more for those calibers. If they can lug it around, the 20 ga is about the bestthing they can get. It wont kick so much( my brother who is 13 can shoot 100 shots easy in a day) and it can be used for almost anything.

So there it is. Take this info and ask your kid what they think. Usally they know what they need.

  9. a rossi single shot 20 guage that can also turn into a .22lr. taught me to only use 1 shot

  10. I have seen two good answers on here.  The Mossberg and the youth model Remington 870 are both good starter guns for a young person learning to hunt or shoot a shotgun.

  11. I have a Mossberg 12 gauge that I started with.  However I was a little older when I started shooting with it.  The 20 gauge would be better suited for younger people, but I have seen kids as young as 11 shoot a 12 gauge. Mossberg is a good gun and is cheaper so if they scratch the wood or ruin the gun you aren't out a lot of money.

  12. Anyone that can't spell above a 6th grade level shouldn't even have a squirt gun holmes.

  13. I think the best starter shotgun is a .410 single shot. A single shot will teach you patience, aim and discipline. And they are inexpensive so as you age and want to go with a larger one, you are not out much money for the .410.

  14. Pump 20 gauge
