Question:

What would you recommend for a rugged street legal dirt bike that can handle desert heat?

I have a 4x4, but I want to get into some ridiculously remote areas with a dirt bike that can be comfortable on the street. It must be 4-stroke and be good on gas. I want it to be light, so nothing over 650cc and be able to handle a 2-up load and some survival gear as well.

Any suggestions?

  1. What?  You didn't scare me enough in the 4x4?

  2. Yamaha XT600E

  3. several come to mind...

the Kawasaki KLR650 would be first choice if you tend to be more on the roads but these tend to be a bit on the heavy side.

the Honda XR650L would be a close second behind the KLR as it tends to be a bit heavy also and detuned from it's racing brother the XR650R with the performance parts removed too.  but the engine is very solid.

the Suzuki DRZ400E is better suited for the dirt with some road riding but not really up to par for any long road rides.  considerably lighter in weight over the KLR or XRL

the KTM 525 or 530 EXC was also made dual sport worthy in 2007 which is a very good combination of true dirt bike but yet street legal.  these tend to be a bit more expensive but they come with all the high dollar competition parts (brakes/suspension/hydraulic clutch, etc.) from the factory.  245 lbs, hard to beat if you can afford the upfront cost to purchase.  my bike of choice these days...

depending on what state you are in, you might have the option to purchase a fully capable true off-road bike and covert to a dual sport bike.  my first choice there is the Honda XR650R with a BajaDesigns dual sport kit.  I know this is legal in Texas but I don't think so in CA.  not sure about other states...  this would be my first choice of the non-factory dual sport bikes and my second choice overall behind the KTM 525/530EXC if you can legally get street legal where you are located.

  4. Schwinn:  This hot little number should be exciting to ride:

  5. You're looking for a dual-sport.  From your requirements, I'd recommend a Kawasaki KLR 650.  A little porky, but enough power for 2-up and camping gear.  If you're looking for more dirt orientation, look at the Suzuki DR-Z-400E, or DR650.  If you're looking for more street oriented, try the Suzuki V-strom 650.

  6. Most likely a Honda 250.... It is one of the best for a street leagal....

    MoToR ChIcK

  7. My hubby agreed with PMK- said you can't go wrong with a KTM, they're worth the extra money and if you can wait until the season passes you should be able to find one for a reasonable price in the trader mags.

  8. Ive had a xr-400 for years. Depending on your tire it kicks *** on the asphalt and is planty ballsy in the dirt. I hang with motocross dudes in the dirt, then i get to ride it home while they load up. With the plastic tank you can drop it and it doesnt matter. As far as 2-up remember NO FAT CHICKS!!!

  9. Don't be a *****......get that ZX-14 dirty.

  10. BMW F650GS or if you want a real dirt dog - R1200GS

  11. good old XR650 very dependable great all around bike with lots of aftrer market goodies available and priced well.

The KTM 525/530 also a great bike.

The DRZ 400 Suzuki works well if you want a little more nimble bike they also have a 250
