  1. Get a car that is diesel and small CC.


  2. since its second-hand only, my only advice is to buy as small as possible. small cars generally use less petrol than medium or large cars. try mazda MX-5, they are sporty AND fuel efficient :)

  3. Try a Citroen AX 1.4D or 1.5D: Average 61mpg, plenty around for your £1000, both in cheap tax band.

    As an example, that's about 10mpg better than something like a Renault Clio diesel.
