What would you say about all this?

Everyone in my program needs to buy a laptop from the school. After 2 years, we've paid $2000 for this laptop. It cost $1200 back when it was new to buy in a store.

The laptops are low-quality, they're slow, and crash often. In 2 years I've seen enough of these laptops break; but then again, we're a young and careless age at twenty-something.

Back to the price: Why does it cost an extra $800? We lease/rent software from the school. For the same price, I could've bought the software with spare change, instead of renting it for 2 years. Ownership > Lease.

We also recieve 9-5 IT support. Do you know what they do? "Erase HD*, re-install OS, see you in 4 hours." Not to mention the overweight (lady) who cursed at me and threatened to slap me.

*You're damned if you give them a laptop with homework on it!

So if you were in my position, what would you say? Total ripoff, right?

  1. Absolutely buddy..

$2000 for a laptop??? What is it Solid Gold with Jewels?

Does it have 32GB RAM & 160TB hDD with Octo core water cooler processors??

  2. i would say just buy your own, it will be better quality at the same price and new.

  3. its a scam the school is making money from it, a privet school?not much can do about it,except call dell ,gateway and such tell the dude on the phone might get a competitive bid . this happens in the real world sometimes showing the board of dir. the cost savings they have to open it up

maybe get bids and publish them in the school paper

  4. Looks like the extra $800 is the cost of the loan (financing).  Prepare yourself to be screwed the rest of your life on this point.

  5. I'm with Matt on this one....Buy your own laptop. For $2000 you can get a decent gaming laptop from Alienware, running a Core2Extreme and 4 GB Ram. Why Lease to the Extreme when you can own an Extreme?
