  1. Play Mizuno... you will thank me later

  2. Are you looking for a set as in, everything in one box? I'd advise not to take that route as for just a bit more expenditure you can get much better quality from the same brands.

Hippo, BS and RAM are squarely aimed at the beginner/budget end. They are serviceable, and if your just starting out, you could do a lot worse. Ben Sayers' new Benny driver is impressing critics, but its still a budget club. I haven't tried any of their kit, so I can't comment.

I tried a couple of Hippo clubs but I didnt get on with them, they felt cheap. RAM have made some nice clubs recently since they put good shafts in them (not the QUBE though, ugh). I recently swapped my Mizuno F50 3-wood out for a RAM Fx7 3-wood, and now the mizzy sits unused in the garage, the Ram just feels better right now.

MD are gaining a name for themselves, you won't go too far wrong with their latest kit (the Superstrong woods and Irons are good, if not great), but the older stuff from two-or-three years back is not so hot. I'm currently using an MD driver and I hit it further than my Cleveland HiBore which cost many times more.

Bottom line - none of these are premium brands; If you buy their box sets (bag, woods, irons & putter) you'll get a set thats barely competent. Buy separate clubs and you've got a better chance of getting decent clubs that suit you and you'll stick with. Don't skimp on irons, and wedges, they are the workhorses of the bag, and pick a putter that suits you, regardless of who makes it.

Of the 4 manufacturers you mention, I'd be tempted to go with MD, but you should also give Benross clubs a look, they have made some great woods/drivers in the last few years, and are only a bit more in price terms.

One final caveat -  none of these brands is going to have much re-sale value, so consider that if you think you might give up at some point. The big brands will at least hold some value if you decide to sell them in the future.

    Good luck with your golf
