  1. I think that the best introduction to New Orleans food is through one of the neighborhood restaurants.  While there are many great restaurants in New Orleans, I think the best starting place is those which are known for New Orleans cuisine.  That is why I don't have any French, Japanese, New Cuisine (whatever that is) etc. places on this list. They are more casual and more reasonably priced than the restaurants usually on a must-do list but they will provide anyone with the flavor of New Orleans.

    My recommendations are:

    Liuzza's

    Mandina's

    Liuzza's By The Track

    Parkway Bakery (po boys only)

    Frankie & Johnny's

Almost all of these are cash only, so be prepared.  Enjoy!

  2. down by where they have mardigras every yr there is a really good restaurant...its right there on the corner...

but i dont' know what the name of it was.

    sorry im not much help

  3. I just had a substandard experience at Commander's last week.  Since Katrina, the old wait staff that had been there 30+ years has gone, and the new people don't seem to have their hearts in it.

I would recommend Jacques-Imo's or NOLA!  Check out their menus:

    Mmmmm.....

  4. You got good suggestions from banjoman, Marrcella S, and - .

Consider Tujaques Restaurant (823 Decatur Street).  Tujaques is very traditional with a menu not very different from one in the 1850s. It also has moderate prices:  http://www.tujaguesrestaurant.com/

An option with music is The Palm Court restaurant.  It is very nice, has moderate prices, and traditional live jazz starting at 8:00pm: 1204 Decatur Street, tel 504-525-0200 (reservations are important and they are not open every day). The Palm Court is closed from about July 25th to about September 25th each year.

If you want somewhere outside the FQ, look at Cafe Degas. It is a very French restaurant near City Park at 3127 Esplanade - which is not within walking distance of downtown (5 to 10 minutes by taxi). They are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays (504-945-5635).  Cafe DeGas is a partuculary great place for lunch on a nice day as the restaurant opens the walls and has "open air" dining.

    Good luck!

  5. Drago's!

Get them some grilled oysters, and its not one of the tourist traps like some of the other suggestions here.

  6. Emeril's !

  7. k-paul's creole kitchen for dinner

and you must go to cafe du monde for beignets

  8. I think Galatoire's  is just vintage New Orleans.  I enjoy going there.

  9. I lived in New Orleans for seven years.  If you've got money, go to

    Commander's Palace

    Arnaud's

    Brennan's

    If you're on a budget,

    Deanie's Seafood

    Ralph and Kackoo's

    If you just want fast-food

    Mother's

    Russel's Po-boys

    Central Grocery

  10. I recommend The Napolean House. Not only is the building beautiful and historic, they have great muffellatas, a true New Orleans dish. Their jumbaliah is also really good!

If you're willing to pay a little more, I also recommend K-Paul's. The paneed veal there is truly excellent!

If you're going for breakfast, there's only one place to go: Cafe du Monde on Decatur Street. It serves doughnuts covered in sugar (beignets) and coffe, as well as hot chocolate.

    Hope this helps!

  11. pat o'brians

  12. there are many restaurants that are good my favorite is port o call

  13. K-Paul's

    Jacques-Imo's

    Galatoire's

    Antoine's

The Gumbo Shop - chicken and andouille gumbo is to die for!
