  1. Well, there are a couple that come to mind when it comes to dramas.  The first one being "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan, and it's also a classic; you may have already read it.  I think it's fascinating, and it gives so much insight into the lives of these Chinese women and their culture.  I highly recommend it.  You really do walk away from this book feeling like a different person, with a greater understanding and compassion for others. The second one I will suggest is "Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham.  This particular story takes you through the life of a boy born with a clubbed foot.  The storyline takes him through adulthood where he faces many challenges and heartbreaks.  I really enjoyed reading that one too.  It's the kind of story that breaks/heals your heart all at the same time.

  2. Drama alone is nothing: it would then be "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

But that may indeed sum up life, if Shakespeare's Macbeth is right.

Dramatic settings, or characters, need purpose or meaning to make them rich.  Even if it's only love.  Dr Zhivago struggling in the snow, in the midst of revolution.

Or war, with The Cruel Sea, and a tiny corvette cramping together  those who need to endure hardship and find and provide comradeship, through action and the even more draining waiting.
