What would you say to someone who thinks education doesn't matter, or that college is a waste of time and money?

To some extent that is true, and to some extent it is not.  There is a lot of value in simply working hard for living and learning the ropes, but there is also a lot of value in higher education, or even self education outside of a "school" environment.  There needs to be a balance in your life.

I would hope that person had a d**n good marketable trade skill that won't be shipped over seas. When people are young and get a job making $10/hr they think they've hit the jackpot but try raising a family or buying a house on that. The statistics show those who have a 4 year degree make SO MUCH more over their life time than those with only a high school degree.

I would encourage that person to at least go to a community college and get a two year degree. Hopefully, taking GE classes will spark an interest in something they could make a career out of.

You can tell them that you are mature enough to realize that you will not ALWAYS be young, pretty, and healthy.

When you are young and don't have much responsiblity or expenses and are young, fresh, beautiful, often education isn't as important.  But when you get "middle aged" with a receding hairline, and things not so perky it gets tougher.  

Lots of folks in thier 40s and 50s (making decent money) are now loosing thier job because it's being outsourced over seas.  The world is not a place that folks start a job and retire from making a miricle salary as a janator and a good pension plan.  The folks that have degrees are the last to be laid off and when they are the few who find a job when they are.

Hit middle age and get laid off with out a degree and your doomed.  You'll never recover finanically from a blow like that.  You are mature enough to know that.
