What would you suggest to somebody who wants to start taking care of the enviroment?

I agree with the tree planter. And also plant some crops. And don't forget, when your life is over, to decompose.

Drive a car that runs on natural gas (methane). Better for the environment and better for your wallet at the same time! $10 to fill up my Crown Vic in Utah. I love it!

A few trash bags, some friends, and a day picking up trash along roads or in a park.  It's inexpensive, easy to do, very accessible, and has immediate visible results.   I figure anybody not up for this, probably isn't that serious.

Picking up/ recycling other peoples' trash

is like being on the defense.

Planting trees is like being on the offense.

Reduce, reuse, recycle, and research.  I'd tell them to do their homework on eco-friendly tips and not to feel like they can use/consume more just because something has an eco-friendly label.
