We'll be there for 6 days (Florence, Lucca, Siena and Rome). My wife and I would love a list of suggestions.

Thanks!

  1. i would wear jeans

  2. October can be warm during the day and cool at night so you need layering or a few different weight clothes with you. Remember that Italians are infinitely more stylish than we are and seem to be so effortlessly.

Here are my tips for women:

-- You can never go wrong with black.

-- Italians don't do over-sized t-shirts or tank tops that aren't fitted or tailored. They also don't wear shorts (although a new trend is the kind of short/capri pant that hits just below the knee).

-- Some nice dresses or skirts and tops will go anywhere not have you stick out as a tourist.

-- Sweaters for evening or a nice blazer/jacket.

-- Always carry a wrap (scarf) to wrap around your shoulders or around your waist to go into churches. No bare arms/shoulders or short skirts allow.

-- Italian women accessorize -- so a put together look with sunglasses, headbands, jewelry belt, etc. will make you look more local. And for easy packing bring neutral colors that mix and match and then use accessories to change your outfit (I'm starting to feel like a Glamour article but I guess they are right.)

-- You'll be doing a lot of walking so shoes are important, but Italians don't wear sneakers (unless they are expensive designer sneakers). This is one area where you don't want to try to be like the Italians who seem to go everywhere in impossibly high pointy heels -- what a nightmare on cobblestone! I would recommend you invest a bit in a very comfortable pair of all-purpose walking shoes or sandals. I like Ecco, Clarks, Geox -- all expensive brand names but your feet will thank you (although I got a great pair of black Clarks at TJ Maxx for $20 so if you search you may get lucky).

-- Don't carry a backpack. This signals you out as a tourist and actually is less safe than a shoulder bag that you hold close to your body and always keep a hand on.

For me: Khakis, polos or button-downs and good walking shoes (see above). A nice jacket or sweater for the evening.

  3. Depends on what you're going to be doing.    Edited for typo

  4. October is still a mild month, no need for heavy clothing. Because you will be in Tuscany, if you can it would be interesting to visit some wine producers.
