What year did the U.S. government stop making solid copper pennies?

I've heard they stopped making solid copper pennies in the early 80's but them i heard they stopped making them in 1932 due to the high cost of copper in WWII and due to the low supply of copper and the high need for it.

  1. Copper still isn't cheap and the cost of copper plus the cost of production rose beyond the value of a penny in the 80's. There is serious talk of discontinuing the production of pennies entirely due to the high cost of production now.


  2. 1982 was the last year of the copper cent.

    that year some were copper and some were 90 % zinc and 10% copper .

    in 1943 they were made of zinc coated steel so that the copper could be used toward the war effort.
