  1. Started in 1975, peaked between 1979-1982.

  2. There were multiple waves of Vietnamese boat people.  The three that I know of:

In 1975, after the Fall of Saigon, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese (especially those who supported the defeated South Vietnamese government) fled their country by sea.

In 1978, after the communist regime imposed an economic restructuring, another wave of Vietnamese fled the harsh economic reality.

In 1979, after the Sino-Vietnamese War, (a war between Vietnam and China,) the Vietnamese government retaliated against ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam, and China saw them as Vietnamese.  So Chinese Vietnamese fled the Vietnam by sea.

But the exodus began when Saigon fell.

  3. After 1975, when the South of VN falls into the hand of the communists in the North region ( to be exact on April 30th), lots of people crossed the border illegally to escape from the poor standard of living in VN that time. It was bcuz of the tough life that people risked ( Some even died in the sea bcuz of many things, pirates, woman being raped, etc)

taking the boat to travel abroad and seek a better life.

Juz imagine how hard it was when suddenly the money was changed and a night turned you from a rich man to the one with nothign but your 2 bare hands!

  4. Pretty much right after south Vietnam fall in the hand of communists in 1975, people start leaving the country.
