I'd say the early 1980s. That's when I first started seeing people using them. I got my first one in 1983.

They weren't camcorders, however. They were big, bulky units that connected to a portable VCR. You carried the VCR around in a bag, the camera was wired to it. I still have mine, although I haven't used it in years.
