  1. It depends how you define "Olympics".

The ancient Greeks participated in events of athletic competition and referred to these as the Olympic Games.  They go back to Biblical times.  The very first "Olympic champion" is believed to be a cook who won a footrace.  Instead of a Gold Medal, the winner of each event was presented with a laurel wreath, which the champion wore on his head like a crown.

The Olympic Games as we know them today were first held in the year 1896 in Athens, Greece (in honor of their Greek origins).  They were based on the same format of athletic competiton as the ancient Greek Games, but now athletes from around the world represented their own countries, and medals were awarded as prizes instead of wreaths.  Only male athletes participated, and the events mirrored those typically found in today's "Summer" games.  Most of the events from this First Olympics and various traditions (such as lighting the Olympic Flame) have carried through to this day.  Other events (including rugby, tug-of-war, and a shooting competition involving manequins) were later dropped, and over the years other events were added & more countries began to participate.

The Winter Olympics did not formally begin until 1924, and I believe it was the 1928 Games where women participated as athletes for the first time.

This may have been more information than you wanted, but I hope you enjoyed learning this.

  5. The International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894.

The 1st Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896.

The 1st Winter Olympic Games were officially held in Chamonix, France in 1924. However, they were known then as the "International Winter Sports Week". The IOC didn't officially accept their results as the first Winter Olympic Games until 1925. In addition, figure skating was first contested at the Summer Olympic Games in 1908 and ice hockey was debuted at the Summer Olympic Games of 1920.
