What year has been the hottest on record since records have been kept? Cannot find this anywhere! Only get second hottest, tied for this and that. Please provide source!

I think it was in Death Valley, CA it was like 127 degrees.

Best I could find was the hottest year being 1934, with 1998 being the second hottest.

It's difficult to find real information since every site seems to want the hottest year to be since Al Gore's book and movie came out in an attempt to prove him right.
