Look at the plate on your motor .  The last 2 digits of the second line (19xx or 20xx) will give you the year.  See attached link for a picture of the plate and it's location on the engine.

Joshm is right, but only on newer models that are "year branded", and i think yours is older.  Give the serial# to a Mercury/Mariner dealer and have them look it up on Mercnet.  This will also give you the ownership and warranty repair history.
