I am buying an acura integra third gen and the seller doesn't even know the year!

it looks great, very fast, turbo and bov, but HE is the problem! he says it's a 1996, and one minute he's asking 6,000 and the next day he says 6,500!

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO! what years was the type r actually created? is there a 1996 integra type r or not????

  1. get the vin # and do a carfax  it will tell u the year and the exact model the car is.

personally i would not buy the car based on the owner.  if he acts shady  no telling what hidden problems the car might have.

  2. check if its really a type r. you can tell if its a type r if you look at the motor. see if you can find somewhere engraved in the motor that says b18c5. thats the type r motor. if it says that, 6500 is a steal. but it if says b18c1 thats the gsr motor, the model below type r. if it says b18b1 then thats the base model commuter motor. its hard to find a type r under $10k. also another way to check is if the head block is red. however thats easily changeable but its one step closer to identifying it.

even though the car seems skeptical if all turns well i still think you're too in experienced with integras to actually own a type r. this stuff is actually peanuts to most honda enthusiasts. if anything just buy it then sell it for twice the value you got it for. thats an easy 5-6 grand off the bat. if you are experienced with these cars then go for it.

  3. yes they did have a type r in 96 it was the first year made and the third gen body started in 94 ans the 98 type r is better than 96

  4. The 3rd gen Intergra ran from 1994 to 2001 and by length, it would be considered the most "popular."

As for "Type-R" it was not released until the 1997 model year.  There was no 1996 Type-R, it was still the GS-R.  The main difference between the GS-R and the Type-R was that the Type-R had 195hp, so if you can grade a nice, clean, under 100K one for $6500, it's a steal.

But, like all things in life, be aware of deals that are too good to be true.  Either this guy doesn't know his cars, which I doubt if he has a true Type-R, or he's been in one too many accidents and is retarded.

I say do a VIN check, confirm the year, and then do final carfax or something to make sure title is clear.  $6500 is steal for the real deal, but I doubt you're getting the real deal.  Be weary of fantastic deals...

    Good luck.
