  1. Multiple choice of course

You have 1 in 4 chances to get the right answers.

  2. I'd rather do fill-in because you can get partial credit, you still bs if you need to, and the teachers tent to be more lenient with their grading because they understand the time constraints and thinking required for fill-ins as opposed to multiple choice.

I don't like multiple choice because even if I know the answer, I second-guess myself when I see other possibilities. I prefer to just know the answer and explain it. I agree with Dorothy - short answer tests are my favorite.

  3. multiple choice

  4. Neither.  Both these types of exams only require that a student do enough studying to recognize the mostly likely correct answer.  Neither type requires that a student understand the material and be able to apply it.  College should be about mastering a subject, not memorizing an outline or a set of notes.  And testing for understanding requires that the student do some actual writing to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

I've never yet had a multiple choice exam that I couldn't finish in 20 minutes and get an "A" on, even in the last chemistry class that I took which I retained absolutely NOTHING from once the class was over.  It's just too easy to skim through without learning.

Give me exams that combine short answer and essays so that I can find out what I do know, and what I don't know.

  5. Multiple choice... it's easier to spot bad answers than giving a good answer.

  6. Neither!  My favorite type of exam was always the short answer/essay style, because there is more chance to at least get some points out of that.  You might have the general idea down, but a few things backward and still get some points, whereas in the multiple choice or fill in the blank, there is only one correct answer and either you get it or you don't.
