Izzard has engaged in campaigning work. He is especially well-known as a pro-European Union campaigner supporting the further integration of the UK into the Union. In May 2005 he appeared on the BBC's political debate show Question Time, describing himself as a 'British-European', comparing this to other cultural identities such as 'African-American'. As part of his integration campaigning, he was one of the first people to spend a euro in London. This pan-European approach has influenced his work: he regularly performs in French, an acquired language, and occasionally in German, in addition to English.

In July 2003, Izzard was made an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England for "pro-Europe campaigning", "his contribution to promoting modern languages and tolerance of other cultures and lifestyles" and for having "transcended national barriers" with his humour[7].

  1. its some weird outdated sense of nationalism (racism?...nahh) that keeps a lot of people anti Europe...honestly I dont care either way....I will spend money just as easy whether its poundor euro...makes sense for all of Europe to have the same currency to me

  2. I always knew he was a prat

I did not say he was stupid I said he was and is a prat, and if not wanting to be governed by an unelected  committee of corrupt officials sloshing about in the gravyboat of my money makes me a 'little Englander' then so be it

  3. I will vote for him.

God.  That guy is SO hot!!!!!

  4. shame, i used to like him

  5. I think it is wonderful. He is funny, intelligent, articulate, and not afraid to follow his own dressing rules...I think he is a great ambassador for all that is good about the Brits.

It is about time Britain faced up to the fact that it is European. Most of us are a mix of Euro blood so why the fear? We all live on the same piece of rock. I personally consider myself a citizen of the world.
