  1. I think that is down right rude!  It is not to say that I don't let an elderly person check out in front of me, but to be so brazen is offensive.

  2. It wouldn't bother me because plenty of younger and quite able bodied people routinely cut in front of me or bump into me though I am a very patient and kind person. I try not to hurry the person up in front of me. It takes as long as it takes. It would depend but maybe the elderly person isn't feeling well. I would cut them a break for sure. But I don't for the younger and just plain rude people. I give them the look of death. I continue on.

edit: There is no reason to just cutt. If someone asks to cut in front of me then I will let them if I can but sometimes I can't wait either. That is pretty rare though.

  3. It's not okay for people to cut in line regardless of their age.  However, what can you do?

If it was a young person, I would laughing say, "Hey!  Go to the back of the line!" and walk in front of them to take my place.

But an elderly person?  Yeah, I know it's ignorant and I know you might feel like kicking them to the curb; but talk yourself down and graciously allow them to step in front of you.

I guess you can tell I have a soft spot in my heart for old people.  Even cranky ones.  Some of them have been through so much and they may not even be thinking straight anymore.

I think you can tell the difference between a sprightly elderly man who saunters up the line, smacks your leg with his cane and acts like the show can start now because he's here AND some confused curmudgeon who doesn't even register what he sees.

Be nice to us old folks.  You may be one yourself one day.

  4. It is not ok, but you are speaking of a person who may not understand things anymore, or maybe he has to pee.

  5. It's weak. I usually say 'excuse me'. Although I was the cashier once for that sort of thing, and the dude just had to pee really bad and wanted the bathroom key.

  6. suck it up, and cut young people off when you get old.

  7. Being older does mean having license to be rude.

    I would definitely say something.

However, I find that older people are more likely to be polite, and I often offer them the opportunity to join the line ahead of me.

  8. This is absolutely not ok. It doesn't matter who you are you don't do this without someone offering. Its rude through and through. You give the benefit of the doubt to the elder as far as respect, but respect must be earned and maintained. If someone takes advantage of the respect of others they loose it.

  9. I have seen elderly people in line and asked them if they would like to go first.  However, I do know that some elderly people are very self centered and will push others out of their way.  If an older person just cuts in line without asking, I would say something to them.  If they asked nicely and looked tired, I would let them cut in.  It is never okay to just cut in line.

  10. Being old doesn't make everything right.  The "Greatest Generation" has a sense of self importance that exceeds hubris.

  11. Not ok for anyone to cut, and I think with the elderly, most being retired, have nothing else to do, they do not need to cut.

  12. Old people are weak you can just take your spot back w/out too much of a fight.  "Excuse me, I was standing there" is an effective, if nonviolent, technique too.

  13. it's awful. i think if someone asked nicely and had a reason, it'd be much easier to let them get in front of you. it's the same whatever age you are, isn't it?

i find i can't usually say anything, though. unless they're really rude about it. it's most difficult when they smile and step confidently in front of you and say thank you - even though you hadn't offered.

i was in a really long taxi queue a couple of years ago and there was this tiny old lady with a cane standing near the queue but not in it... and when a cab drove up she turned around, crushed her cigarette underfoot, whipped up her cane to block the way for the next guy in the queue - and hopped into the cab herself! left a whole line of open mouths behind her. :p

  14. It is rude, but I can't argue with the elderly because I don't have the heart to do so. I am almost 45 now so if they are a lot loder than me I usually am first to offer them to go ahead of me anyway.  When I get older I will not do that though
