Coral is the calcified remains of the exoskeleton of a small marine organism.  The reefs are many colonies of these organisms in a centralized location.  Reefs are important because they provide an important habitat for many marine animals.  Think of the movie Finding Nemo, the place that Nemo lives in the beginning is a coral reef many fish spend their entire life in this habitat using the coral and other organisms for protection.
