  1. A sentence must have a Subject (noun) and a Predicate (verb) nothing else is necessary.

Adjectives, Adverbs, Conjunctions, Direct and Indirect Objects are all extras that add more meaning to your sentences.

  2. Not all sentences have to have a direct object. Those with intransitive verbs *can't* have a direct object.

    Fletcher screams.

    The junkie overdosed.

For a sentence to have a direct object, it must have a transitive verb--one that takes a direct object.

    The man kicks his tires.

    Mandy reads the newspaper.

    Maryn types a reply.

Tired, newspaper, and reply are the direct objects, receiving the action of the verb.

For a sentence to have an indirect object, it must have a transitive verb which can or must have the ability to be directed to or for the benefit of another noun, usually a person or other living thing.

Mandy reads the newspaper to her kid sister.

Maryn types a reply for Havanna.

The indirect objects are kid sister and Havanna.

  3. The only things that a sentence needs is a subject and a verb.

it doesn't need an indirect object, direct object, predicate nominative, ect...
