Whatever happened to all the buzz about the particle collider?

For awhile everyone was like "OH NO!" and now no one talks about it anymore. What happened?

The "Oh no" reactions came from people who don't understand what particle colliders are all about and frankly have no business commenting on them in the first place.  After the falsified hype died down, such things went back to the way they were, only being on interest to physicists.

Think of it this way, as exciting as it is in terms of research, determining the properties of exotic subatomic particles really doesn't do much for the average person who has to go to work, cook dinner, do laundry and take a shower.  On the other hand, embellishing a story about how some new physics experiment will end the world does pique their interest.  Much like the writers of such hype, your average Joe doesn't really understand the facts involved, and may not notice that the author lacks credibility.

What happened to all the buzz about the Mandelbrot Set? Nowadays people don't even know what it is!
