  1. internal medicine is the treatment of diseases or certain conditions well, with medicine. a doctor will prescribe pills and remedies to help a patient to get better. the other side of treatment is surgery which is a bit more risky but can be effective.

  2. The field of medicine humorously known that requires a certainly high IQ (medical joke).

If you've ever seen the tv series "Scrubs", both JD, Elliot and Dr. Cox are all internists. They work at the hospital, diagnosing and treating diseases that generally need to be treated in a hospital setting. Internists don't perform surgeries at all, but they interact with surgeons regarding whether  a specific patient should be operated or not. However, internist can do some procedures that require near sterile conditions like lumbar punctions or to remove liquid from lungs with a syringe.

Dr. House is another internist though internists in general aren't diagnosing uber rare diseases that affect mitochondira.

Many specialties in medicine require at least 1 year of basic Internal Medicine like Cardiology or Neumology. Even Sports Medicine requires at least 1 year of Internal Medicine. You can still choose to finish the 3 years of Internal Medicine and choose a subfield later on.
