  1. As a native of California who has been living in Brazil for two decades, including four years in Rio, here's my take. There are cultural differences, of course, but once you decide to _live_ in a place, daily life (work, relationships, friendships, leisure activities, etc.) is what you make of it. Unless you live in a war zone or an oppressive society, the way you live your life is more important than where you live it.

Brazil is a delightful country, but it can also be very difficult. Just for starters, if you could get a work permit and find a job, you'd pay some of the highest taxes in the world. And different than Scandinavia, you don't receive quality services in return. Public schools and hospitals are so bad that all but the poor use a parallel private system. And we haven't even begun to talk about the police.
