I have almost no oil pressure. It goes from 5 to about 20 when I'm taking off. That's it. When the rpm's drop off so dose the oil pressure drop. I changed the oil and the motor dose have 250k but it takes off good and runs good. ???

  1. you probably have a very worn and tired engine...try a very heavy wieght oil.

  2. When its idling, if the engine is already warmed up, the gage should be reading right around the middle mark. When you push on the gas to take off, its normal for it to jump up. Its when you push on the gas and your oil pressure DOESNT move or starts going down that you should be worried, that usually indicates oil leaking past the piston rings or valve stem/seals which can SEVERELY damage your engine. You will know if this happens because you will here a very loud knocking sound and if its the valve it be more of a faint ticking sound...good luck!

  3. Your crank bearings are probably worn out.

Don't let some nitwit tell you to use thicker oil. Thicker oil makes for higher pressure because it's harder to pump. You'll get less oil flow and wear things out even faster.

It's not something you fix on that old an engine. You'd just get a rebuilt if you want to keep the car.

  4. Your oil pressure gauge is telling you that the main bearings are just about worn out and the engine may come apart some time soon. I wouldn't take any out of town trips with it.
