  1. HD-DVD players will play HD-DVDs and Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray discs.

  2. Interesting reading what people think are facts.

Some OK answers and some not.

    Some facts:

    - Blu-ray and HD DVD players both play high capacity disks capable of 1080p/24fps video and multichannel audio in advanced formats.

    - Blu-ray players vary in features since the spec is being implemented in three stages (for example, only Version 1.1 spec players must support Picture in Picture)

    - HD DVD players all support the same basic feature set.

    - All Blu-ray players output 1080p video

    - HD DVD players output 1080i or 1080p (depending on model)

    - Both Blu-ray and HD DVD players play and upconvert normal DVDs to a pseudo-HD (technically HD resolution, but less detail than true HD disks).

    - Each player type is incompatible with the other HD disk format.

    - Both player formats require HDMI connections to deliver HD video (analog connections are limited to sub-HD resolution).

    - HD DVD disks have lower storage capacity (15 and 30 GB now, 51 GB demonstrated but not yet available) than Blu-ray (25 and 50 GB, higher demonstrated but not implemented) but both have sufficient capacity for most movies, multiple sound tracks and extras on one disk.

    - Overall video and audio quality are essentially identical.

    - Disk prices are typically $5-$10 higher than for the DVD version of the same movie.

That all said, with the decision by Warner Bros (~20% of US market) to drop support for HD DVDs after May, there is a good chance that Blu-ray will "win" the format war.

The real question is whether HD disks will be able to supplant DVD. The problems is that most consumers can't benefit from HD disks and/or are unwilling to pay to upgrade hardware and pay the premium price for media for what many consider a relatively minor improvement (on sub-optimal hardware, and relative to upconverted DVD).

It remains to be see whether prices and/or studio actions (e.g. slowing DVD releases) pursuade consumers to abandon DVD or HD Disks remain a niche format supported by those able to benefit and willing to pay premium prices.

For example. I've tried HD disks and don't find sufficient benefit over upconverted DVDs on my HD projector/110" screen to justify more than a slight price premium ... and right now we are a long, long way from that point.

Finally, see the link for a comparison of the two formats.

Hope this provides what you were looking for.

  3. Dear Amit S

Please do NOT answer anyone questions because you have to idea of what you are talking about & how much did Sony pay you? As matter of FACT, HD-DVD it is NOT 1080i picture & it IS support 1080P & support UP to 7.1 sound.

Ok HD-DVD it is 3x times capacity then DVD, Blu-ray it is 5x times capacity then DVD. Both HD-DVD & Blu-ray have equal sounds & both could support up to 7.1. sound.

  4. The question is now moot (it no longer matters) as for visual output quality HDDVD matches BluRay (on comparable equipment, ie 1080p output).  However, with WarnerBros and New LIne announcements as of January 6th, BluRay has 70% of the market share for putting movies on their disks.  It's no longer a good decision to get an HD player, ...

I own HDDVD and would think now that BluRay has 70% of the studio market share that they have in fact won this round.  I don't see how the HD camp can do anything.  They definitely don't have a response except that "we're shocked" - no "we have a deal in the works" or anything.  They cancelled their CES press conference because they have no response that will matter.  MS doesn't care about HDDVD or it would have been on XBox 360's long ago.  I'm sure I'll be buying a BR player at some point - there are movies they have I want and only more now in the works.  So, Universal and Paramount can continue exclusive HDDVD support FOR NOW but that wasn't the answer to this move by Warner to keep HDDVD alive.

  5. HD-DVD player will play HD-DVDs & Blu-Ray will play Blu-Ray discs but HD-DVD will play ur video quality in 1080i rather than 1080p which is blu-ray there 1080p is clearer but there is not a lot of difference my advice is go for an upconvert dvd player they  are a cheaper alternative to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray all u need is an HDMI cable and u can watch regular dvd's in HD-DVD quality for about $250 less depending on which kind u get i got a philips for $40 and it works great on my plasma tv i don't need to but ne special discs compared to the other players all i need is a regular dvd , avi, mpg, mp4, divx, dvd-r,etc. disc and its in HD
