  1. the cheapest thing you can get your hands on, try going to a retail store and but recycled ones. Usually you can get a good set of golf balls that way for a good price.

  2. The above folks are right on the money (pun intended).  You'll lose more than you keep in play for the first few years.  I'm not being mean as I am myself just now to the point where I can play a round with the same few balls.

But if you are playing with some better people and don't want to have to keep guessing which ball is yours (want the same brand for the whole round), Top Flite is good and affordable and they offer a few different types to choose from.  I always liked the Wilson Pro Staff.  Dunlop LoCo and  Precept Laddie are good too.  Of course while you're looking for your lost balls, you'll most likely find many others to add to your bag.

    Good luck!

  3. No brand name, just the 18 pack.  Once you start keeping the ball in play, then move up to the better balls.  I played Dunlops when I begin playing.

Golf can be expensive.  If you buy a dozen Pro V1x, and lose all of them in a round, your total cost just went up $40.  So, buy the 18 pack for $15 to start out with.

  4. I'll be 100% honest with you.

When first starting out golfing, you won't play different or even benefit from a Nike One Platnium or Pro V1 or Callaway HX.

You'll need to be armed with a plethora of cheap crappy balls, due to the fact that you'll most definately be losing well over a dozen every 18 you play.

Get whatever is cheapest when starting out.

At a beginner level you'd be wasting all your money paying premium for balls.

Try some low end top flites.

  5. Cheap.

TopFlite and Pinnacle are good bets. You'll probably also benefit from a ball labeled "soft". Low compression balls generally work well for beginners.

TopFlites are made by Callaway; Pinnacle by Titleist.

If you want to play a "better" ball, try looking for X-Outs.

It'll likely be a while before you are playing well enough to be able to tell the difference between ball types.

  6. Get a ball that's made for a higher trajectory.  Most beginners have trouble getting backspin and holding the green.

  7. On a price vs performance ratio, you can't beat a TopFlite.  They're cheap and perform well at most levels.

  8. Just about any ball will do for a beginner - I used to use mostly the ones I found on the course when I was hunting for my ball in the rough or woods.  There are some bargains out there if you want new balls.  Walmart sells some Nike balls (long and soft) that are inexpensive, and Golf Galaxy always has a special on where you can get an 18 or 24 pack for very low price (usually Maxflis or Top Flites).

  9. Go with Pinnacle.  They're not expensive and they're long off the tee.  Once you improve, switch to a high end ball.  It's worth it around the greens.

  10. The cheapest available because your going to lose a ton of balls when your just starting out.  Once you get a little bit better then you can start worrying about getting good balls.  Save yourself some money for now.  Golf is expensive enough.

  11. I would suggest looking for a dsitance ball, and cheap one at that...
