long range planes are designed to fly longer distances without stopping.  short range planes are designed to make short hauls.  generally, long range planes have more seats and more passengers, larger fuel tanks etc

aircrafts that are used for international are much more bigger and accomodate more passengers. most intl aircrafts are 777s and bigger with 3 cabins (first/business/economy). Domestic travel consists of airbus 319 and 320 also 757 and 737. these smaller airplanes can hold around 160 people total while the intl flights can accomodate atleast 350 people.

There are several differences. The safety issues pertain to aircraft that are registered in the US. Those requirements may be different in other countries.

1. Aircraft that fly over the ocean carry inflatable rafts in case of an emergency ditching in the sea. Aircraft that are used only over land do not carry rafts.

2. Two-engine aircraft that fly more than a specified distance from an alternate airport (75-207 minutes, depending on the aircraft) must be certified for ETOPS (Extended Twin Engine Operations). These are additional safety requirements that are not necessary for domestic operations since alternate airports are readily available in case of an emergency. Three and four-engine aircraft do not need ETOPs certification.

3. The seating configuration may be different. Aircraft that are used for lengthy international flights will typically have upgraded first and business class seats, as well as upgraded food and beverage service for passengers in those seats. Economy class seats are typically the same size for both international and domestic flights.

Actually, Boeings have a reputation of having better service on overseas. For the rest, it's the same.
