  1. Vilseck is a village and not only a military base. Outside the military base people of course speak mainly german. But you can expect a lot of them knowing at least a little bit english. Especially in shops they should be used to having american customers as well.

Here you can find some information:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilseck

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amberg-Sulz...

A climate chart of nearby Amberg you can find here:

    http://www.klimadiagramme.de/Deutschland...

Be aware that Units are international standard and NOT what's used in the USA:

temperature in °C (degree centigrade), precipitation in mm (= l/m² or liters per square-meter)

  2. the ancient barvarien town of vilseck is geographically completely separate from the nearby lage american military base which is commonly referred to by the same name.

since the us military soldiers bring there families to live with them, vilseck actually has more americans than germans, so you should not have any languageproblems at all.

weater: 4 seasons. spring mostly cold til may, summer can be hot, but don't take that for granted. fall starts in october and in november/december it can get cold. just be preared for anything.

  3. We went to Vilseck before and stayed on base at the cabins they have there close to the lake. I really liked it there. As far as I can remember, they had a nice size PX, the housing was  4 plexes, not stairwell housing like on most German posts.

Most Germans learn English in school, but are uncomfortable to speak it. But you should be fine going shopping and only speaking English. They will understand you. Only the older generations won't, but the ones 45 and younger will. On post you won't have a problem with the language, since it's all American.

The weather, it's 4 seasons, so you will have it all. Snow in winter, hot in summer.
