I'd like to join up swimming in the winter, and therefore want to start working out now in the fall. Anybody know of any good workouts I can do to gradually start getting into good swimming shape?

  1. a good swim workout for me is to swim one nautical mile in the Gulf of mexico during the warm summer months and a NM in the lap pool indoors when the weather is cold outside.  I would try something easy to start with til you can build up your endurance and stamina.

Try doing a slow breast stroke, do about five long laps in a Olympic size swimming pool, take it slow, your not in a relay race yet.  hen you have done this type of exercise for say one or two weeks, everyday, then increase the laps to ten, but do not try to overdue it, and if you have never done any type of endurance swimming, play it safe and stick close to the sides in the event you start to cramp up, this is the most dangerous thing that can happen to a swimmer, get cramps while swimming, especially in open water races.

I use to swim for a relay team in my High School, it was a ten man team and I was the anchor man and we never lost a single race.

I also did a lot of scuba-diving so I had lots of experience in the water and I had conditioned my body and my mind to endure.

Take things easy at first, and do things at your own pace, but most of all, enjoy swimming and have some fun doing it.

Swimming is the only sport that I know of where you never seem to sweat!

  2. alright so youve never been on a team before ? how old are you.. but uhm lets see. go to a community pool indoors and just keep swimming laps to build your endurance and then after a week or so change it up. swim 5 50's on the well uhm 45? ..thats slow but hey you've never done competitive swimming before. then do 5 100's on 1:30. just make it up as you go along

  3. No one on this board can provide you with adequate information as the answer to your question is so complex it would take PAGES of answers.  I'd highly suggest that you NOT start swimming on your own with the purpose of getting ready to join a team for a couple of reasons.

First, in order to be good at swimming, you must first learn how to properly swim the competitive strokes.  This can take months or years and absolutely cannot be achieved on your own.

Second, giving advice about starting by yourself without knowing anything more than the information you provided is useless as we know nothing about your current ACTUAL ability.  Since you're a beginner, the ONLY way to know that is to observe you swimming.

Your best bet is to find a local swim team and pay the money for membership.  You should also chose a club that is a member of USS (United States Swimming) as those clubs have coaches that are qualified by USS.  BTW, the USS is the governing body of swimming in the US.  It is affiliated with the US Olympic Committee and the International OC.

  6. The person that could give you the very best answer to your question would be a coach of a Swimming Team at a university.   I know the Swimming and Diving team at Texas A&M University is very good.  I cannot remember his name; but, you could call the Athletics Department at Texas A&M and they could either give you his phone number of take a message or figure out some way to get your question answered.

  7. there are several correct answers..it depends on what you want to work on if you want to build up you endurance or improve your stroke. there are several sites on-line that have work outs available for your needs at any level..just remember to stretch, have a good warm up and focus on your stroke improvement. Use pull sets and kick sets. also remember to focus on a good turn at the wall that is really how a race is won and lost..good luck you will do fine..:) PS.. just to let you know all are very good and seem like people that want to help..just  also remember everyone is different and you will find that MOST swimmers are very open and willing to help feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.. good luck.  :)
