The Hitachi is the better of the two plasma's, but in terms of an affordable plasma the Pioneer Viera sets are better than both of them.

Toshiba hasn't made plasma's in a while, so you're not going to find any that support 1080p24 like the Viera -800 models do.

If you can afford a little bit extra, the Pioneer KURO plasma sets are the best TV on the market right now, for PQ, black levels, deinterlacing, 3:2 cadence tests, motion resolution, contrast ratios, etc., etc., etc.

I think it's actually Panasonic Viera not Pioneer.  

Panasonic has been the top selling plasma in the US for several years now and is also a Consumer Reports best buy for at least 4 years.  They are awesome!

If you compare a runco with a toshiba, then the runco wins hands down.
