  1. The US Coast Guard is a separate armed force of the United States.  They (as the name suggests) guard the coasts and water ways of the united states, combatting smuggling and armed attack as well as rescuing ships in trouble or the crews of said ships.  In war time, Coast Guard units have served in combat all across the globe, including running the landing craft at Normandy on June 6th, 1944, running landing craft across the Perfume River in Hue in 1968 and currently running a variety of craft across the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Iraq.

  2. The United States has no National Coast Guard - other countries might. Our Coast Guard falls under the Department of Homeland Security.  You can look up their mission statement online - it is constantly changing.
