  1. the very front where all the controls to fly the plane are

  2. Cockpit initially described a opening in the fuselage in which the pilot could sit 'inside'.  Small boat's have cockpits which are a hole in the deck where the crew can sit to control the boat.  In aircraft there was room for  the pilot and not much else except the controls and a parachute.  (You may remember pictures of the Wright Brothers where they actually laid on the plane.)

Race Cars also use the term Cockpit.  Being a specially designated, area to control the vehicle or vessel must be important because multi-passenger small planes refer to the pilots seat area as cabin if it is shared with the passengers and not separated by a wall or bulkhead (another nautical term).

Over the years the .Cockpit' of large aircraft became large enough to accommodate several crew members with extra seats, work table and sometimes shelves for technical publications.  Because this was a central area where all aspects of the aircraft operation was directed became known as the "Flight Deck. All flight decks I'm familiar with are also separated from, and on a different level than, passenger and rest areas.

Many nautical terms found there way into aviation. I suspect we use upper and lower 'deck' and flight 'deck' in deference to nautical tradition.  We also still refer to that area, on the same level as passengers, as the 'Cockpit'.

Cabin is normally the term used for passenger seating hence we have 'Cabin Crew' versus 'Flight Crew'.  Load Master's whose primary function is to plan load distribution and supervise the loading are considered part of the Flight Crew.

With out seats, the interior is called Cargo Area, or Cargo Hold if it's enclosed and below the deck accessible in flight. Cabin and Hold are also of nautical origin,

I hope this provides some clarity for you.
