  1. shakespear is the best monologue

  2. Katurian in Pillowman is a man.  Yes, Sarah Bernhardt played Hamlet, there have been all women versions of Waiting for Godot as well (which goes directly against what Beckett wanted), and Mary Martin played Peter Pan.  There are characters such as Puck in Midsummer or Ariel in The Tempest where nowadays they are cast as men or women.  Women can play men's parts.  However, generally for auditions you want to choose a piece that is age and gender appropriate.  Sometimes material is appropriate for either gender.  As far as suggestions, contemporary or modern can mean anything written in the last 50-75 years.  But to stay really contemporary try the last twenty years.  Depends on the age range you are looking for. Try The Diary of Anne Frank (it was written in 1955 but it's still done a lot).

  3. Don't get thrown off by the word contemporary. All that means is that it's modern.  So for instance, Shakespeare would not be considered contemporary, but Neil Simon would.

When it comes to finding monologues, there are tons of sites to help you (just see what you can find on google). You can also go to the library or your local book store. There are books filled with monologues, for all ages, and in all styles. But my best advice is to go back and think about plays you've been in and see if you can pull a something from them. This way you have the advantage of already knowing the show/script.  Also, you can spend less time memorizing and more time on your character.

I realize this is kind of long, but I hope it's helpful.

  4. Once upon a time, there was a little boy upon whom his mother and father showered nothing but love, kindness, warmth, all that stuff. He had his own little room in a big house in the middle of a pretty forest. He wanted for nothing: all the toys in the world were his; all the paints, all the books, papers, pens. All the seeds of creativity were implanted in him from an early age and it was writing that became his first love: short stories, fairy tales, little novels . . . and some of them were good, some of them were very good.

Yes, Katurian is a man, and so is Hamlet, but that didn't stop Sarah Bernhardt from playing him.

  5. Ok. A contemporary monologue is basically just modern monologue. (A monologue being a one person recital of a script) There are plenty of websites out there that have monologues, but if you can help it, you really should read the entire play the monologue comes out of in case the auditioners ask you about the themes or plot. A really good contemporary monologues site is: http://www.mvhsdrama.com/contemporarymon...
