You can get an older 240sx and do a turbo swap from the 2 liter sylvia.  That would run you around 5-7k for car and engine.

How bout a 97-2000 Integra GSR.  Good reliability, fast, great mpg.

An older 2.5 rs Impreza will give you awd, not much power but it can be upgraded.

94 bmw 318i.  Put money into fixing it up and it will look sharp and handle great.

mid 80s early 90s mustangs or camaros. craigslist normally has them pretty cheap and the mustangs are very reliable and easy to work with.
