  1. Radio Shack can fix you up with a decent model.  Even the top line are within reach for most, and are very adequate.  If you go bonkers the you can spend what is to me a chunk o' change.

Questions regarding frequencies used are readily available from the FCC, as railroad radio use falls under their jurisdiction.

Information in the form of line-ups are hard to find on general road frequencies any more, which is why if you know the frequencies of MOW radio traffic, you'll get a better idea of what's coming your way.

Carrying this idea one step further, having the capability (as well as the frequency) to monitor PBX (or whatever it's called these days) radio traffic is a big help.  This is a good way to know what's happening in your immediate area because the microwave towers (not everything is satellite, you know) are area specific, just as a cell tower.

Speaking of trains coming your way, if your just getting into the hobby, when out and about pay attention to your surroundings at all times and in at least 360 degrees. Failure to do so can cost you your life.

  2. i would use a desktop dual trunk for in the house and a handheld scanner when away from the desktop mostly all railroads use vhf freqencies in the states very easy to get try radio shack they should have everything you need
