  1. Pre did his 5k in like 13 min. so i dont think a highschooler can do it thaaaat fast. maybe like 15 minutes for really good guys and 17 or 18 minutes for really good girls.

  2. I run in the mid 17s as a sophomore and the top runner in our state running under 14 thats college level  the average in our state is like 18 flat

  3. most of these people do not seem to know very much about high school cross country.  posting high school and world records will not answer the question.  the answer to you question depends on several things.  first is what kind of competition is in your area.  fast is a relative term, meaning that a sophomore runner considered fast would simply have to be above average in his area, unless you are good enough to compete on the national level.  my area personally is a bit above average and the average sophomore 5k is around 18:30.  Now this is including all sophomore runners, not just varsity or top level jv runners.  a fast 5k time for a sophomore in my area is under 18:00.  but saying that, there are several sophomores who have run in the low 17s and high to mid 16s.  The top two sophomore runners in my area have run prs of 15:31 and 15:45.  this is very rare.  if you are a competative runner, you should try to hit around 18:00s by the end of your sophomore year.  another thing to consider is whether or not you are competing for a spot on jv or varsity.  while some jv programs are great, others are not very deep.  many sophomores running top spots on jv may think that they are pretty fast, but in fact compared to the other dedicated sophomores on other varsity programs they are not very competative.  and by the way Craig Lutz, a senior from Marcus, Texas and someone I have run against, won the NXN (Nike Cross Nationals) individual title last year with a time of 15:09.  granted the course was difficult and muddy.  Lutz is one of the highest ranked cross country runners in the nation and regularly runs about 14:45.  With all of these incredible times, it is easy to feel slow.  That was not my intention i simply meant to give you an informed estimate on a fast sophomore 5k time.  One last thing to consider is what stage of development you are in during your sophomore year compared to your senior year.  Personally, I am not even close to being fully developed as a sophomore.  If you look at the fastest sophomores, they are close to being fully developed.  Early bloomers if you will.  Just remember that with time and training, you will get faster.
