  1. Remington makes an excellent rifle, if I were going to purchase one it would be a sendero with the heavy barrel. My own long distance rifles are made by Ruger. The 25-06 and 308 are both excellent long range calibers. I use a 7mm Mag as well. Savage has a line of tactical rifles that several people I shoot with have shown interest in. As for law enforcement rifles the best place to find a 'deal' would be at a large gunshow. Of the two you are looking at I would get the remington. If your not commited yet, look at the Ruger target rifles.

  2. lots

  3. The Best Choice for your purpose is the Savage Model 10GXP3 with Accu-Trigger, it comes with a 3X9 variable scope mounted and bore sighted for only $633.00 Dollars brand New.*

  4. The Remington 700 tactical. Just saw one on sale new for $549. The Savage 110 tactical is a great rifle too. I used to own one. I paid $450 for it ten years ago.

  5. Any civilian can buy the law enforcement series from any rifle manufacturer...... I should point out for the average target shooter the "tactical" or "law enforcement" series rifles are over priced. Why that is I dont know because theres really nothing special about them, besides the black finish....... The Remington 700 SPS Varmint can do anything a 700 SPS "tactical" rifle can do - the barrels just a little longer.......

Remington 700 SPS Varmint..... About $600

Savage 12F/TR chambered in .308... About $1000 -- This is a much finer rifle but does cost more....

If your budgets a little bigger then consider the Kimber 8400 Tactical -- close to $2000

If the Kimber 8400 tactical is more than you want to spend then surely consider the Kimber 84M Montana.... Very nice - about $1200

I personaly own the Remington SPS Varmint rifle and am quite satisfied with it.... I do realize the Savage is a little more accurate as well as the Kimber but they cost more too.....

I like Savage th more, just as good as a Remington but cost less. My personal favourite scope manufacture is Leupold

  7. I'am buying a new rifle this fall , same as you . I think  I'll go with the rem. varmit  308. bolt action , 26 inch barrel. Good luck.

  8. They're both pretty good.  The Rem has more accessories for it, but critical ones are available for the Savage 10/110 - good optics bases, good stocks, upgrade triggers (if necessary...I've never used the Accutrigger, I don't know how good it is), etc, so that really shouldn't be an issue.

    I have an older (pre-Accutrigger) 110FP in .308 and I don't regret buying it.  It'll do sub-MOA no problem.

And yes, you can buy ones marked "Law Enforcement", "Tactical", etc.  In fact, that's probably why they're marked like that.  Tactical = Tacticool.

  9. Look at the Savage lineup; the heavy barrel 110 is favored by police snipers in 308 caliber.  If you have the money you can have just about anything.  If you are not locked into the 308 and would like to have some fun do this; get a BRNO 98/29 Mauser which is chambered for 8mm Mauser.  Drill and tap it for a good scope and you have a thousand yard sniping rifle that really gets the job done.  The 196 grain slug has good long distance traveling characteristics that defy all the new and improved stuff.

  10. Thompson Icon Ultra Wood 308 Win

    $725.00 brand new

    Integral weaver style bases

    Interlock bedding block system

    Solid steel machined receiver

    Detachable box magazine

The AR 30 is pretty interesting too.

  11. There both good quality rifles.I would go out and hold both and see which one fits you the best and that your most comfortable with.Yes you can buy law enforement series such as the Remington 700 pss I think it is and the savage 110 fs.The remington vtr is a good rifle but its up to personal preference

  12. Without breaking the bank, the Savage 10FP or the Remington 700SPS Varmint rifles.  I have owned both.  The Savage is a little more accurate out of the box, but I personally like the feel of the Remington Stock and Action.    The Savage Accutrigger is better out of the box than the X-Mark, but that is an easy fix.

As was already mentioned, ammo will make a huge difference as will proper break in and care of your barrel.  Plan on spending near as much or more on your scope and mounts than your rifle if you plan on doing truly precision long distance  shooting.

If you want to spend more money for a better stock, then get one of the more expensive versions of the 10FP with a target stock or step up to a 700P version of the Remington rifle.

  13. Do you have a certain price range or budget to work with? The rifle is only half of the equation you still need high quality optics. You have selected 308 and that is a good choice.

Rem 700 VTR, Varmint Synthetic, SPS Varmint are good long range rifles. Then there are the 700 Light Tactical Rifles and PSS (still some out there) up to the Remington Model 40/XB and M24. Yes you can purchase the L.E. models.

I don't deal a lot with Savage but I know a lot of folks swear by them.

  14. Savage makes an excellent rifle and they run a little cheaper than the Remington rifles. For under $600, you can get a Savage 10FP. I have had mine for a little over a year and it is a great shooter.  With the 168 gr. boat tails, an experienced shooter can achieve minute-of-angle groups at up to 500 yards. Maybe longer... I've just never shot mine longer than that. I really like the adjustable accu-trigger as well. Both the Remington 700 and the Savage 10FP are available to any civilian so long as you can own a bolt-action rifle in your area.

If you want to go semi-automatic, I would recommend a Springfield M1A.
