  1. Believe it or not, I think the best way to buy a GPS unit is to buy it from one of those Cable/Satellite shopping channels.  The reasons why I say this is because they tend to run specials where the units can be discounted to under $200 as well as the ability to spread the payment of the units over time.  But like many online retails, they do also have a wide variety of units to choose from.

For example, HSN has a $229 Intellinav unit on sale.  If you choose their flexible payment option, they ship the unit out to you immediately after you submit the order along with the first payment of about $57 plus s/h).  Then they charge you every month there afterwards $57, three more times on your credit/debit card.

As for myself, since I already have a Palm Treo 750 cell phone, I went to Palm's website and bought the GPS package.  The package includes a Palm-branded Bluetooth GPS unit and a mini-SD card with TomTom 6 Navigator software.   The cost after rebate is only $169.99.

  3. My choice is also a Garmin, but it's the Nuvi 350.  It has text to speech, which tells you the name of the street you're turning onto and has many other helpful features.  It's very compact, only about the size of a deck of cards.  You can add detours to your route and it lets you search for gasoline stations, restaurants, parks, etc.  All features run off the touch screen, no pesky tiny buttons to push.  You can download updates to your computer and load them via USB onto your GPS unit.

I got it for $350 from PCnation.com, which is about $100 less than you'll find it in a store.  They only charged $11 for DHL overnight.

All the research I did prior to my purchase indicates that Garmin's system is superior to TomTom's.  My wife's job takes her all over the state and she's never had a wrong turn yet with our Garmin.  Also, going home is simple, since Garmin lets youu set up "home" and will calculate directions there without typing otut he address.

  4. I recommend, and own the Garmin 330c GPS,  It cost $224 now, go to www.amazon.com, they sell it. Ready to use out the box, big easy to see  screen, even voice prompts when to turn. Chow

  5. I AGREE.......

BOUGHT MINE OFF EBAY UNOPENED AND UNREGISTERED FOR $165.00 + $8.00 SHIPPING.

WORKS AND LOOKS GREAT AND COMES WITH MANY FEATURES AS WELL.

  6. I tried an LG model for a couple of days and didn't like it.  Garmin seems to be the most popular, but I bought a TomTom ONE.

It's the only model I could find that has a pc interface which is great for advance planning.  It's also the only one in its price range that will plan an itinerary from ANY (known) address or map point  to ANY other (known) address or map point.  This is a great feature if you are planning a fly & drive trip and will be bringing your GPS with you. When you land at the airport and pick up your rental car your itinerary (airport to hotel or airport to local business, etc) will already be stored in your GPS.  All the other models will only plan an itinerary from the current GPS fix to known address or map point, so you can't do any "pre-planning".
