I am moving to Maui Hawaii soon and want to know some good advice on a decent surfboard. I am about 5'10-11, weigh about 175. I have not surfed that much, but have been skateboarding and snowboarding for the past 14 years. Any good advice would be a help! thanks!

  1. input your weight, experience and height into rusty's surfboard website and it'll tell u the height u shoudl be getting and type :]

    good luck!

  2. Depends on your age, athletic ability, and what kind of surfing  you want to do. When you get there, find a local surf shop that has rentals. Rent a board, go out and try it, see what you like and then you will be in a better position to make a purchase.

  3. Speak to your local surf shop. Try out some few boards and see how they respond. These shops should be able to offer boards that people can test (i think you have to leave credit card details to prevent boards getting nicked). There's bound to be a shaper there, or they will know one so you know you'll get a good advice.

Try the big foamie ones (yes, the beginner board). Otherwise, an egg-shaped board, around 7'6 will be good fun (example McTavish Egg). Find something with rounder rails. Your aim at this time is to catch more waves as much as you could to get your pop-ups perfect. Then do your bottom turn next, etc.

And then you can progress to riding 6's (since you skateboard/snowboard, i gathered you're geared towards shortboard-riding?). But if you are a soul-surfer, then perhaps try a long board. Again, the type of boards you'll be riding is dependent on the type of waves you'll be surfing.

    Happy shopping.
