  1. The Canon ZR850 MiniDV Camcorder is great.  It's only $200 and has a built-in light for recording in darker areas.  The ZR850 has 35x optical zoom and 1000x digital zoom (don't use digital zoom!)  There are also some live effects and an SD card slot for high-quality photos.  You'll need a FireWire cable though.

    All three use MiniDV tapes to record video and require FireWire cables in order to transfer from camcorder to computer.  If your computer does not have a FireWire port, you can buy and install a FireWire card.  If you have a Mac, there's already FireWire.  Macs are also best for editing video and adding effects--try one if you get a chance and if you haven't already.
