First I would like to list some cost factors....

1)  Gas prices are off the charts.

2)  Insurance cost more for convertibles, 4x4's, sport cars, etc.

3)  Oil changes cost more on big SUV's & large engine trucks

4)  New vehicles loose value immediately after purchase

5)  Used vehicles are more cost effective and do need upkeep

If you feel the need for speed and safety here are some ideas.

a mid to late 80's 4-wheel drive toyota pickup with a 4 cylinder. (i know its only a 4 cylinder but they sure can lay down some rubber)
