  1. It depends.

Open - anything e4.  Black will try to mess you up.

Closed - anything d4.  Black will try to mess you up.

There are no short, simple, opening positions.  Even if it looks simple, I assure you there is lots of hidden tension.

I separated open and closed because Chess is divided that way.   It is not divided by complex/simple.:)

  2. the pawn by one of the towers

  3. White-Queen's Gambit.  or many other variations of d4.

    Black-French defense, or Caro-kann defense.

Those two usually end up being Long and complex. Queen's gambit has Many  variations all of which are quite complicated.

Caro-kann defense CAN be opened up and turn into a highly tactical game, but often times is closed. The french defense can also be opened up, but usually remains closed.

  4. transition into the king's or queens indian and lock up the center of the board.  also study the sicilian defence.

That means intentionally staying away from any position looking like the 4 knights game which has a tendancy to drop pieces and open up lanes of attack all over the place.

  5. Danish or Queen Gambit-

If you want a dominant an strong position yet also a long game.

Two Knights Opening- I know it's basic but it draws all pieces into play making each player think hard. Good for long complex games.

And although i've never favoured it, i hear the Sicilian Defence is popular!

  6. I prefer the Russian style, but the long complex position style should be using double bishop in the center. Get your Queen and Rook as attacking pieces with Bishops for backup.

  7. I would agree that Queen's gambit usually favors the positional player, as a once scholastic player who went in to the adult arena, I would strong recommend staying away from the Caro-Kann and going with the french.  Though I had many victories while younger, it gave me nothing but issues later.  I would strongly recommend staying french.  While it may be a little more "common" there is a reason =P

  8. HOWDY!
